Noma: A Tragedy That Can Be Prevented with Your Support

Millions of children around the world are at risk of developing the painful and disfiguring disease known as noma. This devastating disease is caused by extreme malnutrition and lack of access to basic medical care, and it can result in unimaginable suffering and death. The exact number of children affected by noma is difficult to determine due to a lack of data and underreporting, but the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated.

With your help, we can make a lifesaving difference in the fight against noma. By providing critical resources and support to those who need it most, we can help to prevent and treat this devastating disease, and improve the quality of life for those affected by it. Every donation counts in the fight against noma, and we urge you to join us in this urgent and important cause. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of millions of children around the world.

As the very rare survivors, we see it in our duty to explain, that even if noma is gone, general Oral health must be maintained no matter what and victims of oral diseases should get the support to survive and make sure they have a surviving chances.
We do it by telling our stories and life struggles and want to contribute to ameliorate the living standards and convince officials to invest long term instead of short term.

— Our Mission

Our mission is to raise awareness of the disease at a global level. We work to ensure that noma is included on the World Health Organization’s Neglected Tropical Diseases list, so that it can receive the attention and resources it deserves.

— Our Vision

Our vision is to create a global network of other organisations, decision makers and healthcare professionals to raise awareness and provide resources to those affected by noma. We believe that through education and advocacy, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by noma.

Still, why Donate?

We founded Elysium to share our experience and help people realise that even if the acute phase of noma lasts a very short time, the consequences of it are a lifelong journey for the very rare survivors like us. During the onset of the disease, 90% of the people affected die but for the 10% who survive, the aftermath is a burden.

Words from Fidel Strub:

“First, the healing process is so complex that many survivors also die indirectly of noma because of medical complications. Then, the mental fight is also a challenge. You are struggling to keep living. I struggled until my twenties before accepting my faith. This is only then that you really become a survivor, meaning Mulikat and I are the true survivors who are mentally stable and not endangering ourselves. We both have the advantage to speak English, and this allows us to share our story with a wider audience. We are raising awareness but also giving our insights about what organisations should pay attention to. For the ones not treating noma patients yet, it means knowing about the issue, checking children’s mouth and making sure that the treatment is available if needed. For the ones already providing cares to noma survivors, it means making sure that they have a holistic approach, taking in consideration the mental health of people affected and the long journey ahead of them after recovering. We’re also speaking up about the fact that oral health is important and should not be overlooked.
And then we need governments not just to accept help but to also fix the complex causes of noma. To fight it, you have to raise the health standards, invest in education, infrastructure and social security. If these are secured, noma and other Neglected Tropical Diseases will disappear, there is no loser in this fight.”

At Elysium, we are passionate about our cause and dedicated to making a difference in the world, but we cannot do it alone. Your support is critical in helping us achieve our goals and build a better future for those impacted by noma. Thank you for considering a donation and joining us in this important cause.

We, as Noma survivors, want to express that we are not in pursuit of pity, sympathy, or sorrowful emotions. Our collective hope is to inspire others with our resilience, while striving for recognition and support to overcome our obstacles. By providing financial support, you have the power to create a meaningful impact and change lives. We encourage you to contribute and help us forge a better future together, making a tangible difference in the world. Your donation can be the catalyst for hope and transformation.
